Abstract

Mucosal prolapse syndrome, also known as solitary rectal ulcer syndrome, is a benign condition associated with prolonged excessive straining during defecation, and other functional defecation disorders. Patients with mucosal prolapse syndrome may present with bleeding, mucoid stools, tenesmus, and local pain in the perineum. Common endoscopic findings include rectal ulcers with shallow, flat, and clear borders. However, these findings are only present in approximately 50% of patients with mucosal prolapse syndrome. Others present with redness without ulcers, or sometimes in a raised form like a polyp. Due to its nonspecific endoscopic findings, mucosal prolapse syndrome
may be misdiagnosed as inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer. This report briefly reviews a case of mucosal prolapse syndrome that was misdiagnosed as rectal cancer.
